It’s important to the community. And we want them to say, ‘All right, we watched a generation build, and they accumulated great wealth, but they never combined.’ But what if we show the new generation of wealth is actually doing the opposite? They’re creating the wealth, they’re building wealth, they’re building community, and now they’re combining it. And I think, you know, we stand at the crossroads of that. So we got an important role.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">One example of the duo’s collaborative approach to building community is the Sanbra City Project in Accra, Ghana. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.facebook.com\u002Fearnyourleisure\u002Fposts\u002Fin-october-we-launched-a-groundbreaking-residential-community-in-ghana-400-acres\u002F1045111520983268\u002F\">According to\u003C\u002Fa> a Facebook post, the 400-acre residential development will include at least 600 residential units, commercial spaces, recreation centers and a farm. The project, with a name that means “welcome home,” is a partnership with local Ghanaian \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fafrotech.com\u002Fthai-randolph-built-the-infrastructure-for-creators-pursuing-ip-opportunities\">entrepreneurs\u003C\u002Fa> who share the same vision. The development welcomes people from both Africa and the U.S.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“We love the party, we love the jollof rice, but we gotta just be a little bit more serious about things and real estate is something that’s the cornerstone to really developing a real pipeline,” Bilal told the audience. “There was people on the other side of the continent, on the other side of the world, in Africa, in Accra, that had the same vision. Real estate developers, they thought the same thing, and they own the biggest club and they like, ‘Yo, y’all come here all the time, but we wanted y’all to stay here. We want to really develop something.’ So when we met, it was divine intervention because it’s like we had an idea, they had an idea, and they actually already owned the real estate.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">He added, “They were showing us their factories. They own media companies…they own everything. And we sat down in a hotel lobby and we just talked for like two hours. In one day we worked the deal out. We’ve been partners ever since. So that to us is very important because it’s done with the spirit of collaboration, not colonizers, not going in exporting our way of life in Africa. … We were made in different tribes to learn from each other, not to fight each other. She said the area is seeing the “rapid development and deployment of AI” reflected in how deeply the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fafrotech.com\u002Fsquire-co-founder-dave-salvant-was-asked-to-hire-non-black-executives\">technology\u003C\u002Fa> is becoming embedded in people’s everyday lives, from phones to hospitals and classrooms.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">On policy, Pressley said humans should also be at the center.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“The Blackest part of my district … life expectancy in that 3-mile radius … it’s a 23-year difference. From Cambridge to Roxbury,” she said. “In median household income, the disparity is about $50,000. So 23-year life expectancy, $50,000. Those sobering statistics, I anchor that in every bill that I author, in every policy decision that I’m considering. The best advice that I received as a freshman member of Congress in 2018 is in the process of legislating and governing to never lose the plot. The plot is the people.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">She continued, “When I think about AI and those disparities, I want to make sure that nothing is happening that is compounding those disparities … I care about AI being human first.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Pressley, alongside Democratic Rep. Yvette D. Clarke of New York and others, wrote the AI Civil Rights Act, which bars companies from using biased algorithms and establishes stricter transparency requirements. To explain why the bill matters, Pressley pointed to the “so-called Department of Government Efficiency,” which “took a sledgehammer to our federal government workforce and infrastructure.” She said this disproportionately affected Black workers. She believes Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and the federal government need to recognize that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fafrotech.com\u002Ftesla-on-trial-for-racial-discrimination-lawsuit-filed-black-employees\">discrimination\u003C\u002Fa> looks different today than it did in the 1950s.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“While all these Black workers have been displaced and are applying for jobs, most HR departments are using AI tools, and we have to make sure that they’re not biased and discriminating. So that is why we need the AI Civil Rights Act. Policy is my love language,” she said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">On data centers, she acknowledged that the discourse typically comes from a place of extraction, rather than looking at ways that are “additive and enhancing.” She called for more education and suggested an affirmative model that could be an example of reduced environmental impact. Noting how data centers can provide a service to communities when they move into their area, Pressley pointed to the technology of heat recapture, where data centers can take heat from their servers to heat homes and buildings nearby.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“That’s why we’re here, not only to double down on the problems, on the harm, but to cultivate and to harness the best solutions. That’s why I’m grateful to this room of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fafrotech.com\u002Fdamian-lillard-co-founded-an-insoles-company-that-reached-8m-in-annual-revenue-last-year\">innovators\u003C\u002Fa>. I practice the ethos that the people closest to the pain should be the closest to the power, driving and informing the policymaking,” Pressley expressed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">She later added, “And I have been really heartened by the coalitions that have been building, people from every walk of life, urban and rural, around the issue of data centers. Wouldn’t it be something for them to mobilize around the best models for data centers?”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">That’s why she emphasized education so community members can participate in solutions. Solutions, she said, will include greater \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fafrotech.com\u002Fserena-williams-advocated-for-black-women-hires-at-nike\">representation\u003C\u002Fa> in data development and deployment, and more care for transparency, ethics and governance in implementation and passing the AI Civil Rights Act.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“Make plain to your representatives that the AI Civil Rights Act is an imperative. Ask them to be a co-sponsor. He has worked with families to represent cases such as those for Ahmaud Arbery, Botham Jean, and Atatiana Jefferson. By then, he argued, it’s too late. Learning your workplace rights and understanding how the law works so you can act accordingly should \u003Cspan style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">start on\u003C\u002Fspan> day one.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Chr \u002F>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem>Merritt spoke Wednesday, Nov. 4, in the session “Protect Your Power In The Workplace” at the AFROTECH™ Conference, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in Houston. The conference runs through Friday, Nov. 6, and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fafrotechconference.com\u002F\">tickets are still available\u003C\u002Fa> for the rest of the week.\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Chr \u002F>\n\u003Cp>He addressed discrimination in the workforce and noted that some of his commentary drew on experts he consulted to ensure AFROTECH™ attendees were as informed as possible. This includes gray areas in workplace decisions. For example, someone might be hired because they look \u003Cspan style=\"font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">like the\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\"> \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ca style=\"font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fafrotech.com\u002Fthai-randolph-built-the-infrastructure-for-creators-pursuing-ip-opportunities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEO\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\"> or are considered a better culture fit or because they present themselves in a similar way. He shared that 70% of promotions happen in this gray area. To understand whether a situation in this gray area warrants involving a lawyer, he said three things should be considered, starting with whether a potential hire or worker is a member of a protected class.\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“If there’s a policy that says, ‘Hey, Black folks can’t go, that’s easy,'” Merritt said. “If there’s a policy that says, well, women aren’t qualified for this position, or they’re going to get a cut, then that’s a protected class.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Second, consider whether there is actual harm, not just bruised feelings, that impacts the ability to work. He noted that this harm doesn’t need to be significant, but can be “just any harm.” Third, he said to consider whether a similarly situated individual, meaning someone else at your place of work who is not within your protected class, is receiving better treatment and “is not being forced to go the extra mile.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“Once we have those three lined up, now we’re talking legal case. The other gray area is where most of these decisions are made,” Merritt explained.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Furthermore, he pointed to various \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fafrotech.com\u002Fdeloitte-trump-administration-lawsuit-settlement-diversity-equity-inclusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diversity, equity, and inclusion\u003C\u002Fa> (DEI) commitments that have been pulled back at the federal level, which has also created a shift influencing attitudes across corporate America. This has contributed to 600,000 Black women becoming unemployed, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ffortune.com\u002F2025\u002F11\u002F22\u002Fthe-exit-economy-black-women-labor-force-participation-inequality\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to\u003C\u002Fa> Fortune. He said some workers are now unsure how to grow within their workplace with DEI no longer being uplifted, or they don’t know how to remain an advocate for diverse groups.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Merritt noted that DEI is not illegal and stated that President Donald Trump’s executive orders are “toothless” beyond the federal government. He also reminded workers they can seek support at the state level under Section 1981, which applies to constitutional use of force by state actors.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“Section 1981 says that the Constitution applies to employment cases as well, and you actually don’t have to meet any of the EEOC [Equal Employment Opportunity Commission] requirements in order to bring a case under Section 1981 of the federal statute,” he said. “You don’t have to go through the Title VII process. You can still get those protections from your brand-new Texas Attorney General who replaced Ken Paxton. You can still get it from your brand-new Georgia Attorney General, the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fblavity.com\u002Fkeisha-lance-bottoms-wins-georgia-historic-result\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first\u003C\u002Fa> Black woman in [the state’s] history.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>He added, “We still have power at the state level. We can still fight for ourselves. There are state organizations, state advocacy organizations that can continue to fight for employment rights, and that’s where we find our power when the federal government steps back.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Merritt also said Black professionals should shift their mindset from seeking mentorship to landing executive-level sponsors who can play a key role in their advancement, even setting up these individuals to replace them. The founders took the conference main stage in a year when AFROTECH™ is also marking its 10th anniversary.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">The panel, moderated by Arielle Clay Poteau, was titled “Third Spaces & Building Real Community with The Gathering Spot.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“I think the ignorance is part of the superpower, particularly in the beginning, because if you knew how arduous and rugged the path was, rationally most people wouldn’t do that because there are just so many other ways to go about life when you really know the cost, time, and stress that it comes with,” said Petersen.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Petersen added, “But once you’re down that path, you jump into the water.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3 dir=\"ltr\" aria-level=\"4\">Where does one get the energy to build?\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“That energy is the moat, right?” said Wilson. “It certainly wasn’t capital for us. Our first round was a little over $3 million, which was more money than we thought we could raise. It was a number that grew. We thought it was going to be a million. It was two. It was three. But even though we have always been competing with people and with companies that are better capitalized than us, our spirit for this thing, like how we care about what we’re trying to do has always kept us competitive.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3 dir=\"ltr\" aria-level=\"4\">Trusting the vision when you can’t see the results just yet\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“I used to call TK on Mondays,” Wilson reflected. “This was a real practice for the first two years of business. I would call him on Monday morning. I’d get in my car, and I would say, ‘TK, how much money do we need to make it until Friday?’ How do we survive until Friday?”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3 dir=\"ltr\" aria-level=\"4\">Dispelling the negative connotation that surrounds networking\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Wilson and Petersen founded The Gathering Spot as a community-building initiative that helps people from various professional backgrounds thrive and connect, with the hope that the connections made within the club can extend beyond it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“Most deals, and, like they say, most relationships that advance aren’t a direct relationship where I went to college with a partner at this law firm, so they hired me. I play recreational flag football with this guy who babysits for the law firm, and they needed someone, so now I’m doing the electrical rewiring for the richest guy in the city, and it’s things like that, or even when I think about when I started college, one of the pieces of advice that they give you is ‘Go to office hours. Get to know your professor,’ and that’s the truth. Like, if you go to office hours just after midterms or finals, and you’re like, ‘I wasn’t really understanding the stuff, can you help me out?’ They’re like, ‘I’m sorry it didn’t work out.’”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“But if you went every Tuesday all semester, having conversations, this is real life, I really should not have passed calculus at Georgetown. And then the professor was like, ‘I’m gonna try real hard. It’s not a requirement for you; the curve saves you.’ Those are the things that can happen.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">At the end of the conversation, an audience member asked what city The Gathering Spot will expand to next. He also noted that he joined the company to explore content trust and safety more deeply. In 2025, his role transitioned back to traditional relevance. His current title is senior product manager focused on conversations, AI, and growth.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“My task is, how do we make comments to be the most relevant experience overall. So, let’s say [someone] comes to the platform. What kind of comments should [they] be seeing. When should [they] be engaging with the comments [and] conversations? When we have the opportunity to show people comments, we know that they tend to have a significantly better experience overall. So getting people to engage in the conversation and actually use social media, not as media where you’re just like looking at things but to actually engage in conversations, that’s like my favorite part of the job,” he said.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Nearly 700 million comments are viewed daily, according to insights shared on the AFROTECH™ panel presented by LinkedIn. More than a quarter of Black professionals credit commenting, sharing, and joining professional conversations with access to additional opportunities — the highest among any other racial or ethnic group surveyed, according to LinkedIn data.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“This is how people land roles and jobs,” \u003Cspan style=\"font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">Hutchinson’s explained. “C\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">ommenting on someone’s post, and then somebody sees something, and they reach out to you and get to make a relationship. I’m the wholesome, magical Asian man from the future who wants to give everyone money.’ I’m not trying to speed up the getting rid of their jobs thing,” he explained. “That’s kind of not my jam. But what that said to me was that there’s a hyper-investment bubble in AI, because if the professional investors were legitimately saying to me, it’s like, ‘AI in the name, I’ll cut you a check right now,’ it’s like, ‘OK, there’s too much money and not enough discernment going into that space.'”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>That’s not to say Yang has not embraced AI at all. He projects the amount should be $1,300, higher than his $1,000 suggestion when he ran for president in 2020. These included running out of money, being unable to make payroll, and going a month without paying salaries, all before raising its Series A.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>He said there was plenty of rejection while raising funding. One investor even requested that they “hire non-Black executives.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“That would never happen to a folk, a person, that was not Black,” Salvant said. “Imagine, imagine, a white guy raising money and they say, ‘Hey, can you hire non-white executives? That would not happen,” he said. “So, you hear stuff like that. … We got a lot of nos. … My co-founder went to Yale, a Yale lawyer. So, you hear that and you just have to have tough skin.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Salvant added, “You only need one yes. … That’s also the beauty of it. … For us, that changed the outcome of SQUIRE.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>He also recalled being asked whether the company was targeting Black barbershops. There were “no Black people” on its pitch deck, which he felt they “had to do.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“We wanted to make abundantly clear this was not just for Black people … and then we still got the questions, ‘Was it for Black people?’ And I’m like, ‘Did you not see the white guy on our deck?'” Salvant said. “I think that was very telling to what we’re doing in the climate that we’re raising in. How do we stay culturally relevant? I think once you get the money, you can do what you want to do. … Then when you have the traction, there’s nothing that they can say but like, ‘Hey, it’s evident I was wrong. You’re scaling fast.’ … You can’t deny the numbers. Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>He also challenged founders to build with the “biggest possible outcome.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“Why would we build a product just to serve one community. … I would challenge you, if you’re building a product, to start with the biggest possible outcome,” he said on stage. “Because what VCs want to do is … and it’s math, and it works out, they want one investment to return the fund. And if this can’t get big enough, then they won’t do it. Your company might be a great company, but it might not be a VC-backable company. And that’s OK. The conference runs through Friday, Nov. 6, and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fafrotechconference.com\u002F\">tickets are still available\u003C\u002Fa> for the rest of the week.\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Chr \u002F>\n\u003Ch3 dir=\"ltr\" aria-level=\"4\">How has bad data affected the Black community in the past?\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“I’m not sure if people remember during the early days of the pandemic, the issues that came up with the pulse oximeters,” said Dr. Uché Blackstock, founder and CEO of Advancing Health Equity. “So, those are the devices that are used in every physician’s office, every hospital, that measure the oxygen level of people’s blood, and so what’s interesting is that the FDA had known for around 30 years that these pulse oximeters were not accurately measuring oxygen levels in people with melanated skin.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">She added, “As a practicing physician, I was not informed of that. So essentially, what we found during the early days of the pandemic was that people with melanated skin were denied care because their oxygen levels did not qualify them for treatment, and that was because the data that has been used to calibrate this technology was not inclusive. Essentially, [only] using white skin, and so we saw how using non-inclusive data cost people’s lives.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Dr. Charles R. Rogers, founder and chief advisor of Rogers Solutions Group, echoed that sentiment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“Black people were dying because they had essential worker jobs. Historically, Black folks tend to live in multi-generational homes, so people had to go to work,” Rogers said. “They came home bringing COVID to their families, wiping out, you know, generations, and there was such an eager urge to restart America. The term that was being used back then was to make sure our economy could get put back on track, where instead the correct data should be used to put the funds and the policies made to actually put those funds toward more public health interventions and more pandemic mitigation strategies, so all that, alone, confirms that essential workers’ lives were never essential in the first place, and in order for policy to actually make a difference, we have to make sure that the data is disaggregated, or not clumped, by race and ethnicity, actually changed in terms of being put forward at the state and county levels, because otherwise the resources are not going to go into Black and brown communities to literally help us live longer lives.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3 dir=\"ltr\" aria-level=\"4\">How do we get into the testing?\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">In the pulse oximeter example Blackstock described, the technology was calibrated using data from white skin. So how do Black people get included in testing?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“That’s definitely the question of the hour, and I think that there’s no simple answer to that; there are many layers to it,” she said. “I always talk about the framework for thinking about trust in organizations and institutions. And so one aspect of that is the fact that trust is not only about messaging, but it’s part of infrastructure about how we think about how organizations function, and one is access.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">“Making sure that people have access to the services, the resources that they need. Another piece of it is dignity; people want to know when they’re interfacing with the healthcare system, whether it’s for a clinical trial or whether it’s going to get checked out – that they feel seen and heard, and that their concerns are not minimized. And then another piece is accountability. Who will be held accountable? Finally, thinking about reliability, like if I do this multiple times or interface with this healthcare system or I go into this trial, am I going to be treated well every time?” she AI summers are times when a lot of money is thrown into AI and everybody’s excited about it … It wasn’t quite the AI summer yet so I identified myself as a computer vision researcher. However, at some point I realized, I’m an AI researcher because that’s what gets you money. That’s what gets you fame. And right now we’re in one of the probably, perhaps, the biggest AI summers ever … Because of that, do you know what some people do? People literally hire what we call AI impersonators to pretend to be chatbots. So my institute, \u003Cspan data-d-streaming-word=\"\">DAIR\u003C\u002Fspan>, works with some of these AI impersonators. Yet, many of them, she says, live in vulnerable communities and aren’t paid $1 an hour and are “very traumatized” by “the way content moderators are.” \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“It was a Black man who was the first person to be wrongfully accused of a crime based on face recognition systems in Detroit,” Gebru said. “…This was because of the datasets that were used … No one wants to tell you that the dataset is the most important part of the whole system because it doesn’t sound very novel or smart or exciting … If you’re just gonna scrape the internet, which is how all of these companies are making their money, often not compensating \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fafrotech.com\u002Fd-nice-on-why-artists-can-now-demand-ownership-or-true-partnership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artists,\u003C\u002Fa> not compensating all the people that they’re taking data from, you’re not carefully thinking about what is in your Drawing on her experience and work with one of the world’s largest creators, who “had aspirations of a whole enterprise,” she recognized that creators had different visions for how they wanted to participate in building businesses, she told AFROTECH™. Those insights led to Nile & Co., a brand and IP platform for IP, media, and technology businesses with three strategies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Through its build strategy, the company co-founds businesses alongside creators and athletes as equity partners, while also scaling companies in high-growth consumer and creator sectors. Its second strategy focuses on working with IP owners, creators, and corporations as an operating and commercialization partner. These partnerships include BuzzFeed’s Cocoa Butter, Pero Like, and A*Pop brands, which target Black, Latino, and Asian American communities, respectively. That’s why we talk about the spectrum of participation where there’s endorsement. Look, there are fees and there could be performance bonuses based on the outcome of a project for a creator. Equity, where there’s a real stake in whatever it is that you’re creating. So they want to own a part of the IP or part of the business or what you’re building,” Randolph told AFROTECH™.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“Then there’s equity. The acquisitions reflect Nile & Co.’s initial focus on women, who drive consumer purchasing decisions, according to a press release shared with AFROTECH™.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“You’ll see there are just women who are deeply attuned to this audience and who have real value to provide. I’m not someone interested in how many followers you have as much as how attuned you are to the mission and what types of outcomes you can drive … Can you drive a conversion or an action? Even in a micro-community, that’s hugely important.
